22 April 2025 is Mother Earth Day

Rights of Nature – free webinar

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly recognised 22 April as International Mother Earth Day, acknowledging that in order to achieve a just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs, we need to promote harmony with nature and the Earth. 16 years later, and Australia’s legal system is still failing to adequately curtail climate change, waste and pollution or biodiversity loss.

This Mother Earth Day, the Total Environment Centre (TEC) is bringing together academic, philosophical and Indigenous voices for a free webinar to discuss the international and domestic movement to implement laws and practices that better recognise the Rights of Nature. You’ll hear from guest speakers:

  • Dr Michelle Maloney – Earth lawyer, Co-Founder and National Convenor of the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) and Director, Future Dreaming.
  • Dr Mary Graham – Kombumerri person, Adjunct Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Queensland and Director of Future Dreaming.
  • Dr Erin O’Donnell – Senior Lecturer and ARC Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School, and member of the Birrarung Council (the voice of the Yarra River in Melbourne).

Attending this event will give you a better understanding of:

  • Earth Laws and the Rights of Nature
  • Indigenous First Laws and the relationist ethos
  • International and domestic progress towards recognising the Rights of Nature
  • How you can help shape our emerging campaign
