BioPak and Greenfleet announce latest leaf cup series ahead of World Rainforest Day

(L-R: Kohuhu, Makomako and Kapuka)

Kohuhu (K?h?h?) – The flowers attract pollinating moths and night insects with their honey-scented nectar.

Wineberry (Makomako) – Shares the M?ori name with the native Bellbird, also known as the k?mako or korimako.

New Zealand Broadleaf (K?puka) – Found up to 1,000 metres above sea level, Littoralis means ‘growing by the sea’.

BioPak, in partnership with Greenfleet, has today launched the latest edition of its Leaf Cup Series, unveiling new designs that honour and support Greenfleet’s significant restoration project in New Zealand’s South Island.

Launched ahead of World Rainforest Day, the new series, exclusive to New Zealand, features designs that are inspired by native trees planted at Wenborn Forest, with leaf images of Wineberry (Makomako), New Zealand Broadleaf (K?puka), and Kohuhu (K?h?h?), a tribute to Aotearoa’s rich natural heritage and the power of reforestation.

The Leaf BioCup, originally launched by BioPak in 2006, marked the company’s first foray into sustainable cup design. This year acknowledges a significant nod to biodiversity abroad, with Craig Irwin, BioPak New Zealand’s Managing Director, commenting on the new exclusive New Zealand Leaf Cup Series.

“At BioPak, our commitment to protecting New Zealand’s environment continues to grow through our long-standing partnership with Greenfleet,” said Irwin.

“The Wenborn Forest is a legally protected site for the next 100 years. Over its lifetime, it will sequester approximately 5,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to 2,700 return flights between Melbourne and Dunedin. Its role in climate action is significant, and we hope to continue to raise awareness of this precious ecosystem through our BioPak Leaf Cup Series.”

Speaking of the collaboration, Greenfleet’s Acting CEO, Annabel O’Neill, further commented on the significance of the new campaign.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with BioPak to spark conversations about forest revegetation in New Zealand”, said O’Neill.

“Greenfleet is fully funded by our supporters, making long-term partnerships like the one we have with BioPak invaluable, as we continue growing our forests, restoring nature, and growing climate hope.”

“We have planted over 30 locally native, fast-growing species that will thrive in the exposed conditions at Wenborn. This diverse species mix reflects the pre-clearing forest type and will stimulate natural recruitment and other ecological processes as the forest grows. New Zealand is home to some of the world’s most distinctive species, and we are proud to showcase three of these native trees in such a compelling way.”

BioPak has been donating 1% of profits to Greenfleet since 2019 as part of the company’s ‘Give Back Program.’ To date, BioPak has contributed to critical Greenfleet reforestation projects, planting a total of 6,726 trees.

Beyond its climate impact, the Wenborn project aims to restore dense, biodiverse native forest that mirrors the original ecosystem lost to land clearing, and helps safeguard New Zealand’s natural heritage for generations to come.

“At BioPak, we’re proud to contribute to the long-term regeneration of this precious landscape, helping to preserve it for future generations,” concluded Irwin.

The new leaf cup series has been announced as part of World Rainforest Day on June 22 and is now available to cafes and businesses across New Zealand.

About Greenfleet

Greenfleet is an environmental not-for-profit organisation that has delivered climate action for over 25 years. They are Australia’s first carbon offset provider and protect our climate by restoring native forests.

Greenfleet plants native biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand to restore nature and capture carbon emissions on behalf of our supporters. As they grow, these forests help fight the impacts of climate change, improve soil and water quality, and restore habitat for native wildlife, including many endangered species.

Greenfleet’s partnerships with local communities and Traditional Owners support broad benefits for the country and communities in which we live and work.
