Closer connections for better climate disclosure

GRI-CDP mapping for aligned climate and energy reporting: helping organizations improve data quality and reduce duplication

In support of shared ambitions to enable more coherent and efficient environmental reporting by organizations worldwide, GRI and CDP have released a new resource that maps CDP’s 2025 corporate questionnaire and the recently released GRI Climate Change and Energy Standards.

The new GRI-CDP mapping builds on an ongoing collaboration between the two organizations – formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 – and will help companies reduce duplication while strengthening the consistency and usefulness of the data they share with stakeholders.

The mapping tracks how disclosures under the GRI 102: Climate Change 2025 and GRI 103: Energy 2025 can be used to align with CDP’s environmental datapoints. Providing clarity on where the two frameworks complement and converge, it supports organizations to apply the principle of ‘write once, read many’,  by utilizing the same data across both disclosure systems.

Harold Pauwels, GRI’s Director of Standards, said:

This mapping tool is a new milestone in the cooperation of GRI and CDP, and will help entities to use the same data for different information purposes like the CDP questionnaire and GRI sustainability reporting. It directly addresses the needs expressed by reporting organizations implementing the GRI Standards for Climate Change, Energy and Biodiversity, who were seeking clearer guidance and alignment to smoothen their reporting journey. With sustainability reporting continuing to accelerate globally, GRI and CDP will continue their collaboration to help organizations communicate their environmental impacts and report high quality information.

Amir Sokolowski, Director of Climate at CDP, below:

“We’re pleased to launch this mapping with GRI – an important step towards more consistent and effective environmental disclosure. Through CDP, and with the support of this new tool, companies can report GRI-aligned data directly to stakeholders and the global market, easing the reporting burden while strengthening access to high-quality, comparable information. By improving alignment and enhancing transparency, we can help turn data into action and accelerate the transition to an economy that works for people and planet.”

The mapping will be presented during the joint webinar Unlocking synergies to streamline climate disclosure on 28 October 2025 (10:00 CEST). This free session will guide participants through the mapping’s structure, explain how it supports consistent environmental disclosure, and feature experts from both organizations.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is the creator of the common global language to assess and report environmental, social and economic impacts, as articulated through the GRI Standards – the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting standards.

GRI engages in a multi-stakeholder approach to define and refine the global best practice for sustainability reporting. In addition to standards, GRI provides tools and training that empower organizations of all sizes to build sustainable, long-term value – benefiting people and planet.

CDP is the global independent disclosure system for companies to measure and manage their environmental impacts. Over 14,000 organizations use the GRI Standards while more than 24,800 companies, representing over two thirds of global market capitalization, disclosed through CDP in 2024.
