Crowd funding starts something with Transitions Film Festival

Social impact crowd funding platform StartSomeGood has partnered with Transitions Film Festival and Cinema Nova, in the Victorian state capital, Melbourne, to launch Cinema By Demand, festival screenings funded and curated through crowd funding.

Driven by Transitions Film Festival’s ideals of collaboration and innovation and StartSomeGood’s model of crowd funding for social change, Cinema by Demand empowers festival patrons to play a central role in expanding the festival’s program.

“More than just allowing us to expand our festival program, we were excited about simultaneously test-driving and showcasing a technology that has the potential to empower citizens and communities to make the impossible possible.”

Participants in Cinema By Demand vote on a range of films shortlisted for screening by pledging their ticket purchase on StartSomeGood.com.

Films that reach their funding targets will be screened, and those that fail to gain enough support will not be shown, and pledges will not be charged.

Project Wild Thing 2048 (2)StartSomeGood.com founder Tom Dawkins said: “We’re excited about the potential for crowd funding to harness community engagement in driving new models of distribution in film and other creative industries.

“Crowd funding on a social good-oriented platform reframes the conversation on entertainment media production and distribution to include not just profits and creative expression but also other benefits to society, particularly the education, inspiration and empowerment that can drive social change.”

Cinema Nova’s General Manager Kristian Connelly said the cinema was proud to support the initiative.
