Homeowners urged to act fast ahead of home battery rebate changes

New data shows Sydney’s outer suburbs are leading a surge in demand for home batteries amid warnings March could be the last chance to secure installations before major changes take effect in the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Rebate program.

Leading energy solutions provider VoltX Energy admits this month is the final window for homeowners to secure installation under the existing and more generous rebate, with systems required to be fully installed, not just ordered, before the May 1 cut off.

“It is crucial people thinking about a home battery don’t leave it until April because they won’t be installed in time to qualify under the current rebate. March is your month to guarantee an installation,” said VoltX Energy Chief Operating Officer David Sedighi.

Currently households can claim the home battery rebate on up to a 50kWh system but from May 1, the rebate will drop and only the first 14kWh will receive 100% of the rebate. The next 14kWh up to 28kWh will get 60% of the rebate and any capacity above 28kWh will get just 15%.

“Affordability wise, now is the right time. People who wait until after May 1, will pay close to $10,000 more than they do now for a 50kWh system,” said Mr Sedighi.

“So far the uptake of home battery systems has been heavily concentrated in Sydney’s north-west and western suburbs.

“The top three postcodes are all in the Hills District in Sydney’s rapidly expanding north-west with Kellyville and Rouse Hill seeing the highest uptake of home batteries than any other suburbs in Sydney,’’ said Mr Sedighi.

“Family friendly suburbs tend to have higher energy consumption due to the size of homes and number of people in them, so it makes sense to be more self-sufficient when it comes to storing and using your own power,” said Mr Sedighi.

“The average annual electricity bill for a family of four is now $2,350 and so people in these areas have the output to warrant a bigger 50kWh system and the space to install it,” he said.

The top five postcodes where demand is highest for home battery installations are:

  1. 2155 (Kellyville / Rouse Hill area)

  2. 2765 (Marsden Park / Riverstone area)

  3. 2153 (Baulkham Hills / Castle Hill area)

  4. 2170 (Liverpool / Casula area)

  5. 2145 (Wentworthville / Greystanes area)

In contrast, 171 other Sydney suburbs have shown minimal uptake which VoltX Energy puts down to higher density living with limited space for battery systems and more apartment living.

Low battery uptake postcodes include:

  • 2008 (Chippendale)

  • 2065 (Crows Nest)

  • 2208 (Kingsgrove)

  • 2010 (Surry Hills)

  • 2068 (Willoughby)

“We are expecting another sharp spike in people wanting a home battery before the rebate is cut and while we have one of the biggest networks of qualified installers, we know that households who don’t act now will miss out.”

Before committing to a home battery system, Mr Sedighi recommends consumers do their research before signing a contract.

“Check warranties and product authenticity and what their after-sales support looks like.

“Asking the right questions upfront and confirming the details in writing can save people thousands of dollars and give them peace of mind that they’re dealing with a reputable company”, said Mr Sedighi.
