Allegro Energy today hosted a special Open Day event to unveil Australia’s first locally manufactured microemulsion flow battery (MeFB), marking a major leap forward in the future of long-duration energy storage (LDES). The event follows the company’s announcement of the granting of a US patent for its non-flammable and significantly less expensive grid-scale battery technology.
The event, held at Allegro Energy’s headquarters in Thornton, featured remarks by Matt Kean, Chair of the Climate Change Authority, and James Magill, Executive General Manager of Origin Zero, alongside Allegro Energy’s CEO and co-founder, Dr Thomas Nann.
“We are grateful to all of our partners and supporters who have helped make this day possible. This battery not only represents breakthrough chemistry that can support the clean energy transition in Australia and globally. It also shows how Australia can use advanced manufacturing as a way to stand out from the crowd and do what others can’t do in smart ways,” said Dr Thomas Nann, CEO and co- founder, Allegro Energy.
Allegro Energy’s proprietary microemulsion electrolyte technology has been widely recognised as a critical advancement in long-duration energy storage, offering key advantages over existing technologies in scalability, sustainability and performance. The system is soon to be deployed to Origin Energy’s Eraring Power Station, marking the first major installation of this home-grown solution.
“We firmly believe that battery storage – including long duration storage – will play a pivotal role in Australia’s energy transition, which is why we are building a significant battery portfolio. Our partnership with Allegro is part of our broader commitment to lead the energy transition through cleaner energy and customer solutions, and we look forward to piloting this innovative battery technology at Eraring Power Station, before exploring a further rollout to customer sites,” said James Magill, Executive General Manager, Origin Zero.
With the energy transition accelerating, this launch highlights the pivotal role of local innovation in driving Australia’s shift towards a decarbonised, reliable power grid — while showcasing how Australian-made solutions can lead globally.
Attendees were given the first-ever glimpse of the battery technology, met with local engineers behind the project, and enjoyed tours of the facility. Light refreshments and networking opportunities followed the official proceeding.
