The red-dirt plains of far-west New South Wales are alive with music, colour and community as a record crowd of close to 15,000 festivalgoers descends on Belmont Station for the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash – the largest ticketed music festival ever staged in Outback Australia.
Run by the Outback Music Festival Group – who also own the Birdsville Big Red Bash – the festival officially runs from 21–23 August, but the festivities kicked off early today with the much-loved Mundi’s Got Talent competition and sets from local favourites Leroy Johnson & The Waterbag Band, and Tha Boiz, alongside returning legends Chocolate Starfish, and Mick Thomas and the Headliners.
Across the next three days, the Bash will welcome more than two dozen acts spanning generations and genres, including Brad Cox, Rose Tattoo, Ross Wilson, Shannon Noll, Pierce Brothers, Thirsty Merc, Dragon, Mi-Sex, Ziggy – 50 Years of David Bowie starring Iota, Jeff Duff, Steve Balbi and Bryden Stace, 19Twenty, Chantoozies, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Missy Higgins, Hoodoo Gurus, The Cat Empire, Birds of Tokyo, The Angels, Kasey Chambers, Kate Ceberano and Leo Sayer.
Beyond the main stage, the Mundi Mundi Bash is renowned for its quirky, only-in-the-outback experiences – from the world record Nutbush Dance World Record Attempt and the colourful Mundi Undi Run (both raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service), to morning yoga, camel and helicopter rides, dunny door painting and outdoor cinema.
Crowds were also treated to a live rendition of the Mental as Anyone podcast, where entertainment legend Jonothan Moran, interviewed beloved Australian rock singer and songwriter, Angry Anderson, about his illustrious career and his own personal lessons in mental health.
Now in its fourth year, the Bash has cemented itself as an unmissable annual pilgrimage. Staged just 9km north of Silverton and 35km from Broken Hill, the festival is proudly BYO, dog-friendly, and open to all ages – drawing in families, retirees, grey nomads and adventurous road-tripper
