New Data: Australian EV Drivers Save $32,000 in Fuel Costs Over Lifetime of Car

Ed Harvey, CEO of Evnex

As the Middle East crisis continues to push petrol prices around $2 a litre for Australian drivers, new data released from Evnex has revealed that the average electric vehicle driver saves $2,820 in fuel costs compared to a petrol car, every single year.

The EV charger manufacturer says that saving adds up to $32,430 over the average life of a registered vehicle in Australia, which is 11.5 years.

Evnex’s data is drawn from its network of 5,000 chargers throughout Australia.

It shows that charging an EV at home costs around $380 per year on average, compared to $3,200 for petrol.

Put another way, a full year of EV charging costs about 6 weeks’ of filling up at the pump.

“Most people know EVs are cheaper to run, but very few realise quite how dramatic the gap is,” says Ed Harvey, CEO of Evnex.

“When you break it down, the average EV owner is spending around $7.30 a week on charging – barely more than an almond latte. The idea that you can power your car for a year for what a petrol driver spends in less than three months is pretty staggering.”

The figures put EV running costs on par with common household expenses. At around $380 per year, charging an electric vehicle costs less than a typical home broadband plan.

Harvey says the data reflects real-world charging behaviour, not theoretical estimates.

“This isn’t modelled on lab conditions or manufacturer claims. It’s actual data from Australian homes, reflecting how people really charge their cars day to day,” says Harvey.

“With more than a third of Australia’s electricity now coming from renewable sources – and that share climbing rapidly toward the government’s 82 percent target by 2030 – this is great for both the pocket and the environment. Every EV charged at home here is running on an increasingly clean grid.”

Australia currently has more than 454,000 registered plug-in electric vehicles, making up around 2 percent of the total vehicle fleet.

Supported by policies including the Electric Car Discount – a Fringe Benefits Tax exemption for eligible electric vehicles – EV sales surged 38 percent year-on-year, with plug-in vehicles accounting for 13.1 percent of new car sales in 2025.

According to Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics data, the average age of a registered motor vehicle in Australia is now 11.5 years and climbing.

At a saving of $2,800 per year, EV drivers stand to save more than $32,000 in fuel costs over the average life of their vehicle compared to petrol.

“The cost-of-living conversation right now is real, and transport is one of the biggest household expenses,” Harvey says.

“With the Middle East conflict pushing petrol prices well above $2 a litre, that’s looking like it could get worse before it gets better. In the long term, we all know petrol prices only go one way: up.

“A saving of almost $3,000 a year is significant for any family. Over the life of a car in Australia, that’s enough for a decent deposit on your next vehicle – saved just on fuel.”
