New research from comparison website iSelect has revealed that 79% of Australians have changed their household habits in the past 12 months in response to rising energy bills.
The research highlights the lengths Australians are going to in order to cope with skyrocketing energy bills, with more than half (52%) reducing their use of heating or cooling – a move that could leave households sweltering in the approaching summer months. Other tactics included taking shorter showers (38%) and switching off appliances (40%).
Some Aussies are investing in long-term solutions. Almost one in two (46%) had upgraded their homes by purchasing energy-efficient appliances, installing insulation, switching to LED bulbs, or adding solar panels.
But for many, upfront costs remain a major barrier. Around 38% of people who had not made upgrades, said that they simply could not afford to, highlighting how the cost-of-living crisis is trapping households in a cycle of high bills.
Despite rising costs, the research also revealed that many households are missing out on potential savings. More than half (64%) of people with the power to switch providers said they had not compared energy plans in over a year.
Hannah Norton, Expert at iSelect, said that “With energy bills continuing to rise, households are cutting back where they can, but many are still missing out on simple savings. Comparing providers can be one of the quickest and easiest ways to find a better deal without sacrificing comfort in your own home.”
“Too often, households can end up paying more by staying with the same energy provider for a longer period of time, with new customers often receiving better rates than ones that have fallen to a default offer. Comparing could help you keep hundreds of dollars in your back pocket.”
Energy prices could remain volatile for the remainder of 2025, with costs, extreme weather events and supply pressures all continuing to impact household bills. As Australia heads into the hotter months, households face additional pressure to keep cool affordably.
