NSW JUMPS AHEAD IN PLASTIC FREE STAKES

With the NSW Plastic Plan 2.0, the state has leapfrogged ahead of other states in the goal of reducing plastic pollution, the Boomerang Alliance of 56 ngos said today.

“It’s broad in its ambit and contains several key actions which are critical and will also push national action along.  These include:

  • filters on washing machines to combat a prolific source of microplastics
  • drink cup reuse strategies at venues
  • a product stewardship scheme to accept plastic takeaway cups and food containers for reuse and recycling at scale
  • tethered lids on drink bottles
  • removing dangerous chemicals such as PFAS from packaging
  • a range of single use bans catching up with other states,”

 said Boomerang Director, Jeff Angel.

‘’It’s a big list that requires a lot of implementation work but despite that, we’ll be seeking a quicker timetable on some items.  Another area that requires a concentrated effort is a comprehensive microplastic reduction strategy.  Some of today’s Plan specifically addresses this pollution but the problem is so dangerous to the environment and ourselves, it needs a special taskforce and mandatory strategy to combat it.”

‘’We also welcome the ban on lighter than air balloon releases, finally eliminating the embarrassing allowance of 20 or less in NSW.  It’s a testament to the long standing efforts of campaigners,” said Mr Angel.
