OECD updates Environment at a Glance Indicators – Key insights on climate, energy, water, and biodiversity

OECD has just released a new set of Environment at a Glance (EAG) Indicators.

Updated twice a year, the Indicators provide a comprehensive snapshot of countries’ environmental performance. Drawing on the latest data, and complemented by interactive dashboards and thematic webbooks, the EAG platform helps track progress across key areas: climate, biodiversity, water, air quality, circular economy, and ocean resources.

Each thematic section includes:

An overview of the issues and policy challenges

A summary of how progress and performance are measured

Key indicators and data visualisations (e.g. GHG emissions, drought, policy responses)

In addition, country notes combine environmental data (including on selected policy instruments and innovation) with socio-economic context to facilitate the interpretation of trends and compare progress

For example, in the climate indicators section, you will find among many others the following statistics:

Land surface temperatures in OECD countries rose steadily over recent decades, averaging 0.9°C above the 1981–2010 baseline from 2019–2023 – a significant increase.

In 2023, the highest average annual temperature changes were recorded in Canada (+2.2°C) and Switzerland (+2.1°C), among OECD and its partner countries.

Exposure to extreme heat is rising: 12% more people in OECD and partner countries experienced hot days in 2019–2023 compared to the 1981–2010 reference period.

An estimated 1.4 billion people were highly exposed to extreme heat in 2019–2023, particularly in Saudi Arabia (98.3%), India (97.4%), Thailand (93.6%), and Israel (91%).
