QLD pays to clean up Battery Producers’ mess

The QLD government has announced a three point plan aimed at reducing hazardous battery fires. TEC welcomes this initiative as a first step, but urges QLD to make arrangements to ensure those that produce these dangerous items, pay their fair share towards the costs to reduce the risks they create and fund comprehensive collection and recycling.

TEC Campaigner Mark Zihrul said earlier today: “Batteries represent an existential threat to the waste and recycling sector. That threat has not been taken seriously by the battery industry and now it looks like Queenlanders will rely on taxpayers funding to cover their mess.”

TEC urges QLD to adopt the approach of NSW which is producing legislation, and agree to regulate an effective stewardship scheme over batteries to ensure the environmental and human health risks are minimised and all materials safely recycled.

TEC report on the Batteries Crisis is available here.
