SBN launches ‘SwitchOn!’ for eco-conscious youth

The School Broadcasting Network (SBN) is a registered charity that has been founded to create a global portal for young people, schools, youth organizations and youth media.

Its aim is to communicate ideas, innovations and commitments for sharing culture and creating a thriving and just future for our planet.

In 2014, SBN’s team is spreading its wings to soar into both online magazine publication and TV production.

And with this launch edition of SwitchOn! Magazine being available to more than 100,000 subscribers via SBN’s media partners EcoNews and EcoVoice (Australia), Kidz Hub Media Network (US/Caribbean), One Smile Magazine (NZ) and Positive Impact Magazine (US) ‘SwitchOn!’ is indeed off to a flying start for its global debut! SBN partners with like-minded, proactive media and many other amazing organisations globally, in a collaborative effort to deliver inspired solution-based benchmarks for creating equitable and sustainable societies.

The network currently produces five radio programs for young people that are hosted and co-produced by young people from eight to 25 years old, and a further seven shows are produced for adult audiences in collaboration with WWMN.

SBN’s national/international children’s radio program ‘Primary Perspectives’ won Australia’s ‘Best New Radio Talk Program’ after receiving a phenomenal four ‘top four’ finalist nominations across three categories at the 2012 CBAA AWARDS; the only children’s program to ever achieve such a result.

Primary Perspectives is now aired on over 15 time points around the world each week and in 2013 SBN launched two new youth radio shows, ‘SwitchOn Saturday’ and ‘Music Matters’.

Music Matters has already showcased a diverse A-list of guests such as Wally de Backer, Anne Wood, Kelebek and Dr Allan Zavod.

The show is hosted by 14 year olds Frank Dixon and Miani Rose and received a ‘top five’ finalist nomination in the 2013 CBAA Awards for Australia’s Best New Music Program.

3rd birthday PPSBN’s youth team has now grown to over 30 young broadcasters and the network offers excellent internship opportunities for young people who are keen to increase their media skills.

In 2011 SBN launched its International and Indigenous Youth Awards program to honour the many young people of all ages who are leading the way with their passion and commitment to creating an equitable and sustainable future for all.

Now in its fourth year, the SBN Youth Awards program has attracted nominations from every continent.

In 2013 SBN, in partnership with KIOSC Discovery Centre at Swinburne University, launched its mentorship program ‘Vision 2020 for Creating Sustainable Societies’ as well as the Australian chapter of the US initiative SNAE Trash on Your Back 5 Day Challenge©, which attracted over 1000 Australian ‘Trash Warriors’.

Both of these sustainability programs for teachers and primary to tertiary student are set to expand their national reach in 2014.
