Melbourne-based family violence not-for-profit You Matter has partnered with the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC).
The collaboration directly aligns with both organisations’ missions to drive social impact while promoting a circular economy. Through the initiative, quality bedding items that might otherwise go to landfill are redirected to support families who are rebuilding their lives after family violence.
You Matter’s Havens of Hope program transforms empty spaces into fully furnished and equipped homes, including essential furniture, whitegoods, kitchen and laundry supplies, pantry basics, and personalised touches that create a sense of comfort and belonging.
With limited government funding, these Havens are a vital lifeline – offering safety, dignity, and a chance to rebuild. The Havens provide more than a roof over one’s head; they give women and children the stability to regain independence and the confidence to reimagine their futures.
You Matter CEO Deborah de Rossi is dedicated to creating safe and comfortable homes that support women and their families in rebuilding their lives.
“Many of the women we support are rebuilding their lives from the ground up. It’s an enormous task that goes far beyond finding a new place to live. It’s about creating stability and a sense of hope and safety,” says de Rossi.
The ABSC facilitates the connection between participating businesses, and You Matter, creating a pathway for bedding items to be reused rather than recycled or sent to landfill. The initiative demonstrates the power of product stewardship to generate both environmental and social impact, extending the life of valuable resources while supporting families in need.
“It is neither an environmental nor social win to dispose of a mattress that isn’t at end of life,” said Kylie Roberts-Frost, ABSC CEO.
“This partnership between You Matter and the ABSC is a powerful example of sustainability and compassion working hand in hand. By giving items that might otherwise go to waste a new life, it helps create safe, welcoming homes that bring hope and stability to women and families impacted by family violence. It’s a beautiful demonstration of how social purpose can make a real, tangible difference,” concludes de Rossi.
Last financial year was You Matter’s most impactful year to date with 84 havens delivered, supporting over 108 individuals.
