Statement by Mona Sherpa, CARE Nepal’s Country Director
“On 26 August 2026, a sudden flash flood swept down the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side into Rasuwa district, sweeping through Timure and Syabrubesi before moving downstream into the Trishuli River and triggering high alerts in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts. Search and rescue operations are underway, and we are still confirming the full scale of casualties and damage.
In coordination with the Government of Nepal, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Associations of International NGOS (AIN), the Humanitarian Partnership Platform (HPP), and local partners including Community Self Reliance Centre (CSRC), CARE Nepal is closely monitoring the situation and assessing the needs of affected communities. We are preparing to mobilise emergency relief, including shelter, hygiene, and dignity kits, for affected families as needs are confirmed on the ground.
The flooding has left affected families without homes, possessions, and livelihoods, and has raised concerns about the spread of waterborne diseases due to damaged water and sanitation infrastructure. Relief efforts will prioritise those most in need, particularly women, girls, older people, and people with disabilities, who are often hit hardest in the aftermath of a disaster like this.
Our thoughts are with the communities affected by this sudden flood. CARE Nepal stands ready to support the government and our partners with immediate relief as well as long-term support for recovery. We will prioritise those facing the greatest risks and barriers to recovery. We will also conduct a Rapid Gender Analysis to ensure our response is informed by the specific needs and risks facing women and girls.
While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, CARE Nepal is committed to supporting the recovery and resilience of communities affected by this flood. Through continued support to affected families, we aim to help them meet their immediate needs and rebuild their lives in the aftermath of this disaster.”
