Locals and visitors are being urged to get in quick to experience one of Perth’s best walking trails, as Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary’s Possum Loop on the land of the Noongar People, reopens for a limited six-week season this Spring.
Recognised by Perth Happenings as one of the best walking trails around Perth, the 2.3km loop was reopened by Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) following a 12-month closure due to flood-related damage.
“Getting your steps in has never been more scenic,” said Clint McGee, AWC Sanctuary Manager at Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary. “The Possum Loop showcases some of the Perth Hills’ most beautiful bushland and Avon Valley vistas, and after 12 months of restoration works, we’re thrilled to finally welcome visitors back.”
Located just one hour from Perth, the Possum Loop can be completed in around one-to-two hours and is rated as a Class 3 moderate walk, making it suitable for families, older walkers, and those looking for an easier nature experience.
The loop winds through woodlands, seasonal wildflowers, creeks and waterfalls, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty of the Avon Valley within a protected wildlife sanctuary. Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary supports a rich diversity of habitats, and is home to around 400 species of plants. The sanctuary has also been the site of mammal reintroductions, such as the Tammar Wallaby.
“If you’re lucky, you might get a glimpse of a Tammar Wallaby bounding through the bush,” added Clint.
AWC actively manages the sanctuary through feral animal control, managing fires, invasive weed removal, and revegetation of previously cleared areas.
To access the trail, visitors need to reserve their spot online with a booking and $11 entry fee. The money goes directly towards maintaining the trail as well as AWC’s globally recognised conservation work.
